WhatsApp is the best messaging app for Android and iPhone

Founded in the year 2009 by two former Yahoo Inc. employees, Jan Koum and Brian Acton, WhatsApp Messenger, now owned by Facebook Inc., has recently announced through a blog post that 1 billion people around the globe are now using its mobile messaging service.

After acquisition by Facebook in 2014 for $22 billion, the number of users on WhatsApp doubled from 450 million to 1 billion, which makes it the most widely used and popular messaging service in the world. Lately, the company abolished its annual subscription fee of $0.99 USD to make it available free for a lifetime and is now looking forward to creating it an easy tool to communicate with businesses.

Here is a brief review of this most popular and extensively used messaging app.

WhatsApp Messenger has more than 1 billion downloads which make it one of the most downloaded, popular, and top rated messaging app on the Google Play Store. As this app supports devices, running Android 2.1 up, I downloaded its 2.12.367 version on my Smartphone, which runs on Android Marshmallow 6.0 OS.

After installing the WhatsApp Messenger app, it uses a total storage space of 22.85 MB and average 33 MB to maximum 190 MB of RAM. Before you start the app, make sure that your data connection is on. Once the app gains access to the internet, start it. Accept the terms and conditions after reading them and go ahead. In the next step, it will ask you to verify your phone number, which is necessary.

When the verification process gets over, enter your name and a profile picture. Now you are all set to use the app’s services and features like:

WhatsApp Calls: Users can make free voice calls by using the WhatsApp Messenger. The app does not charge you, but it does consume data as per your usage. So before you make a call to any of your contacts, be sure you have enough data balance.

Groups: On WhatsApp, we can chat with up to 256 people at once by creating a group. Doing so keeps us in a touch with our friends, family members, colleagues in an easy way.

Broadcast List: By using this feature, you can create a list to send a message without any delay to multiple contacts. Broadcast lists are different from groups. When you send info using a broadcast list, the receiver will get the message on individual chat.

Sharing Media: We all love to share things with our near and dear ones. While using WhatsApp Messenger, we can instantly capture or share existing media files like images, videos, and audio clips with our contacts.
Note: The app has a limit of 16 MB for recording videos. If any selected video is over that size limit, WhatsApp will give you the option to trim it.

WhatsApp Web: By using this feature, we can send as well as receive messages directly from a computer’s browser. To use this app online, start the app, go to options and tap on WhatsApp Web. A window will open asking you to visit web.whatsapp.com on your computer and scan the QR code.

WhatsApp Web supports the following browsers:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Apple Safari
  • Opera

Widgets: The app comes with a couple of widgets that allows its user to see all unread messages and capture instant videos, images directly from their phone’s home screen.

Wallpaper: Users can set a custom or remove the default wallpaper for chats on WhatsApp Messenger. If required, they can also download the ‘WhatsApp Wallpaper’ app from the Play Store, which is free and comes with a file size of 4.90 MB.

Chat Shortcut: This option allows us to place a chat shortcut on the phone’s home screen, which makes it easy to send and read messages on the go.

Backup on Google Drive: WhatsApp users on Android can take a backup of their messages and media files to Google Drive. Doing so prevents data from being lost and allows them to restore all files when they reinstall the app.

My verdict:

WhatsApp Messenger is one of the best messaging apps that I have used so far. It is fast, ad-free, easy to use, and very handy tool for communicating with people. The only thing I find disappointing on this app is its video and file sharing features. Users cannot share various files like Word, PDF, ZIP, etc. and videos have a size limit of 16 MB.
